Plants - Fine Art Photography Prints

Plant photography reveals an extraordinary variety of shapes, lines, textures and structures. This collection brings together my photographs of plants in many different forms — from leaves and flowers to stems, thorns, dried plants, seed heads and other botanical details.

Some photographs are simple observations of plants found outdoors, while others reduce them to lines, silhouettes or abstract organic forms through close-up photography, shallow depth of field, intentional camera movement or in-camera multiple exposure. Browse the plant photography prints below to explore both living and dried botanical subjects.

Fine Art Plant Photography

Plants are among the subjects I return to most often in my photography. What interests me is not only their colour or conventional beauty, but especially their structure: the curve of a stem, the rhythm of repeated leaves, an irregular thorn, a tangled vine or the changing form of a plant as it dries.

Seen in isolation, these ordinary details can lose some of their literal meaning and become lines, gestures, patterns or abstract shapes. This is why plant photography in my work often overlaps with minimalist photography and more abstract approaches to natural forms.

Leaves, Stems, Flowers and Dried Plants

This collection includes plants at many different stages of their life cycle. Fresh leaves and flowers can reveal symmetry, colour and growth, while bare stems, seed heads and dried plants often expose structures that were less visible when the plant was in full bloom.

I am particularly interested in these less obvious stages. A twisted stem or dried plant is not necessarily less visually interesting than a perfect flower. In some cases, age and irregularity are precisely what make the subject worth photographing.

If you are specifically looking for blossoms and flowering plants, browse my Flower Photography Prints. For photographs where leaves are the main subject, you can also explore the Leaves collection.

From Observation to Abstract Botanical Photography

Not all of my plant photographs are intended as straightforward representations of a botanical subject. Sometimes I use the plant as raw visual material and concentrate instead on movement, repetition, rhythm and form.

In my in-camera multiple-exposure photographs, for example, I often photograph the same stem several times while slightly changing the camera position between exposures. Because I work handheld, the layers do not align with mechanical precision. The small differences between them create organic structures that would be difficult to reproduce in exactly the same way.

Other photographs are much simpler. A single plant against snow, a stem isolated against a plain background or a close-up of a leaf may need almost no transformation at all. The subject already contains the composition.

Plants, Imperfection and Wabi-Sabi

Dried and irregular plants have also become an important part of my interest in wabi-sabi photography. Plants make the passage of time particularly visible: flowers fade, leaves curl, stems dry and structures gradually change.

I sometimes collect dried plants during walks and keep them for weeks or months before photographing them. Removed from their original surroundings, their shapes become easier to notice, and details that might have seemed insignificant outdoors can become the entire subject of a photograph.

Plant Photography Prints for Interiors

Plant photography can work in many different interiors because botanical forms range from soft and delicate to strongly graphic. A simple black and white stem can create a quiet accent in a minimalist room, while green leaves or colourful flowers can introduce a more natural element. Abstract botanical photographs can work almost like drawings, where the identity of the plant becomes secondary to line and movement.

All photographs on this page are available as fine art prints in a range of sizes and formats. You can also explore my broader Botanical Photography Prints collection or browse all fine art photography prints.
