This photograph was taken in a home studio, using a dried thistle head as the subject — a plant most people walk past without a second look.
The image was created using an in-camera multiple exposure technique. Several exposures were layered directly in the camera during shooting and merged into a single JPG file, not assembled later in postproduction.
The repeated exposures transform the sharp, spiny structure of the thistle into something closer to a drawing than a photograph — overlapping arcs and curves that suggest coiled wire, or the inside of a mechanical spring. The thorns lose their threat and become line work.
The image was shot handheld, without a tripod. Small shifts between exposures were left as they are, which keeps the result slightly imperfect and alive in a way that a tripod shot wouldn’t allow.
