I found these dried plants in a field in a village near home. I stopped my bike and lay almost flat on the ground to photograph upward, using the open sky as a clear background.
Ten consecutive handheld exposures were combined directly in the camera. Small shifts repeat the radiating stems and seed heads, creating a black-and-white pattern resembling a botanical drawing.
The image relates to wabi-sabi, the Japanese appreciation of imperfection, incompleteness and transience. The plants were ordinary roadside forms that became interesting when viewed closely. The print suits interiors with paper, linen and unfinished wood.
