Minimalism in B&W photography
If you prefer simplicity over complexity, minimalism over maximalism, and tranquillity over stress, then you’ve come to the right place. And if you like a slightly darker style of art, that’s even better!
I find that minimalist photography can best highlight the most essential qualities of the things depicted. Check out my favourite minimalist black and white photos from 2018 to 2022 in the video below.
Why Should You Like B&W Photography?
Photographer Siddhant Marar has beautifully described how black and white design changes the perception of photography (this is not a quote, but an approximate interpretation of his words):
I’m sitting in the corner of Starbucks. If I pull out my camera and take a picture, it will look really nice. The picture will be very bright. The first thing you see is 10 people in different colours. Yellow lights, brown tables. Everything is colourful, contrasting and very pleasing to the eye. Now do the same thing with the camera in monochrome mode. The colours are gone, the tables are not brown, the image is no longer coloured. My perception is suddenly focused on what people are doing, how the light from the window falls on the table, the play of light and shadow, people and their stories.
And that is what photography is for me. That’s my personal reason for liking black and white photography. I focus more on the lights and shadows and the story the photo is trying to tell.
The light falling on the subject is absolutely essential in photography, especially in black and white. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re shooting a portrait, a landscape or a rock, as in the picture below.
Light also plays an important role in my photography and I pay a lot of attention to it. This is true whether I’m shooting in my home studio or out in the field.
Comparison of Color and Black & White Photos
It is not easy to say when black and white is better and when colour is better. It’s certainly not possible to generalise, because each photo requires a different type of post-processing. In some cases, both black and white and colour are appropriate. In very simple terms, we can say that for a photo where colour is not important, it is better to choose black and white.
For the sake of comparison, I have selected a few photos where you can directly compare what the black and white version looks like with what the colour version looks like.
Black and white photography offers a completely new way of looking at everyday situations, landscapes or architecture. The brain is not distracted by colour and can focus on the content of the image, the story, the lines and shapes. That’s why black and white photos are so popular. They fit into any interior, they do not distract, on the contrary, they bring peace and harmony.
When people look at black and white photographs, they feel more elegant and “artistic” than ordinary colour images. This is perhaps even more important for the minimalist photographs I produce most often. The absence of colour allows the mind to focus on the most important things, moods, feelings, shapes, lines and overall composition.
Black and white photography allows us to appreciate ordinary objects, landscapes or portraits in a completely different way. We are born seeing the world around us in colour, so black and white photography allows us to look at even the most ordinary things from a different perspective, to see them in a new way. In black and white photography, there is no such emphasis on the accurate depiction of reality – on the contrary, it emphasises the abstract and artistic tone of the image.
From a purely practical point of view, black and white photographs have the advantage that they do not fade over time as colour photographs do, and can be viewed in poor indoor lighting conditions.
Pricing
The final price of photo prints depends on the materials used for the print, the size of the print and the type of frame or mat used. The table below gives an indicative price list for selected photo options. The exact price can be found in the shop on the page of the specific photo.
In the table below you can see the prices for the most common materials on which you can have my black and white photos printed. For other print options (acrylic, wood, metal) please see the photo detail page.
Quality and Care
Black and white prints are produced using archival inks designed to last 75 years without fading. If you do not display your print outdoors where it will be exposed to high humidity, extreme temperatures and/or direct rain, it will last a lifetime.
Every wall print is backed by a 30-day money back guarantee. If for any reason you are unhappy with your purchase, you can return it for a full refund. But don’t worry – you’re going to love it!
