Goby Desert Valley, Mongolia

Higher up, the valley is still wide. The gorge comes later.

Yolin Am — Eagle’s Mouth — is a canyon hidden inside the Gobi Desert, part of the Gurvan Saikhan National Park in southern Mongolia. Most visitors head straight for the narrow gorge at the bottom, where walls of rock press in and ice sometimes survives into midsummer. This photograph was taken further up, where the valley is still open — broad slopes rising on both sides, a wide sky above, and the sense of space that disappears once you descend.

The image was created using in-camera multiple exposure: ten consecutive frames fired handheld, each one shifting slightly from the last. The technique turns the valley’s grass and rock into something closer to brushwork — the ridgelines multiply and blur, the clouds above hold their shape while the land beneath them vibrates. What was a landscape becomes a feeling about a landscape.

In black and white, the Gobi loses its summer warmth and becomes timeless. The same hills could be anywhere, any era. That erasure of context is part of what the technique does — it keeps the emotion and lets the specifics dissolve.

This print works well in spaces that value stillness and abstraction in equal measure — alongside natural materials, in rooms where the eye needs somewhere to travel.
