I photographed the open upper valley of Yolin Am, before it narrows into the gorge, in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert. Broad slopes and open sky give this part of the valley a different sense of space from the enclosed gorge below.
Yolin Am, or Eagle’s Mouth, lies within Gurvan Saikhan National Park. Ice sometimes survives in the lower gorge into midsummer.
Ten consecutive handheld exposures were combined directly in the camera. Small shifts multiply the ridgelines and soften the grass and rock, while the clouds remain more clearly defined. The black-and-white treatment makes the result an abstract view of the landscape.
The print suits interiors combining natural materials with abstract art.
