I photographed five peaks at Yolin Am, or Eagle’s Mouth, in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert. The canyon lies in Gurvan Saikhan National Park, where fractured volcanic rock forms steep walls above the valley.
Near the point where the valley narrows, horses and their owners were waiting to take tourists back to the car park. I left the path, walked around them and climbed a few dozen metres up the slope for a clear view of the opposite wall.
A 24mm view at f/9 includes the full ridge and retains foreground texture. The black-and-white treatment separates the pale sunlit faces from partial and deep shadow in the midday light.
The print suits a large wall or an interior with stone and concrete.
