Ten photographs of two rock faces merged into one.
This image was captured at Yolin Am, a hidden canyon located within the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park in southern Mongolia. The canyon is one of those places that takes you by surprise. After driving for hours through the flat, arid desert, a magnificent valley teeming with life suddenly opens up before you. The valley is surrounded by steeply rising volcanic cliffs on both sides. It is precisely these that you can see in the photograph.
The image was created using the camera’s built-in multiple exposure function: ten consecutive handheld shots, each one shifted slightly from the previous one. While a single shot would have revealed the rocks, grass, and clear sky above the ridge, layering the images multiplies the jagged silhouette of the horizon, creating an abstract, almost impressionistic photograph.
This print would suit spaces where abstraction is valued alongside landscape, such as a study or a large wall, where the viewer can take a moment to appreciate it.
