I photographed Consciousness, a land art installation by Mongolian sculptor Ochirbold Ayurzana, in front of the Gobi Caravanserai Lodge during a guided expedition. Ayurzana won the main prize at NordArt 2019 in Germany and represented Mongolia at the Venice Biennale in 2024.
The figures are made from interwoven metal wire, allowing light and wind to pass through them. The work explores human consciousness in relation to nature through bowed, leaning figures.
The installation is arranged in a circle. This frame shows three figures receding into the distance, with the setting sun directly behind them at the level of the desert plain. Backlighting reveals both their silhouettes and transparent construction.
The print suits a large wall in a room with natural light.
