This photograph, taken in October 2025, shows a houseplant removed from its pot and turned upside down in our garden. The subject is straightforward: a plant that has been removed from its pot and turned upside down.
The root system that had been quietly mapping the interior of the container over several months was suddenly visible. The roots had grown along the bottom and sides of the pot, filling the available space completely and creating a dense, tangled network that looks almost drawn rather than grown.
The image was shot at 70 mm and f/11, close enough to fill the frame with nothing but roots and dark soil. Converted to black and white, the contrast between the pale roots and the dark earth transforms the photograph into something akin to a line drawing — or a map of an unnamed place.
There is no technique here beyond the decision to observe. The structure was already there. It just needed to be found.
