In the westernmost part of the sand dunes of Khongoryn Els in the Mongolian Gobi desert is the highest dune whose peak is more than 200m high. Every day before sunset, tourist minibusses bring dozens of tourists from nearby yurt camps. They all have one goal. Climb to the highest peak and watch the sun setting behind the dunes.
Since I occasionally work as a tourist guide in Mongolia, I have been able to have a look here twice. The sunset here is really beautiful. But as a photographer, I have to try to look at things differently than others. To create unique photos, I have to look for different things, different points of view, and different perspectives. I love harmonious shapes and lines created by nature. And sand dunes are the ideal place where beautiful lines and shapes can be found.
What you see in the photo is a view from under the dune, and the silhouettes of people are tourists who have taken quite a difficult climb and are now waiting for the sunset. I took the photo with a 300mm -1/3 exposure compensated lens so that people were only shown as silhouettes in the photo.
