This photograph was taken in Iriqui National Park near Zagora, southern Morocco — reached by off-road vehicle with a local driver, after crossing flat stony desert, passing wild ostriches, and stopping at a small oasis. By the time we arrived at the dunes, the light had dropped to the angle that makes this kind of image possible.
The composition reads in three layers. Foreground sand, smooth and wide, faintly rippled by wind. A deep wedge of shadow rising from the lower left, its edge a clean diagonal. And behind it, the dune’s upper body catching full afternoon light — warm, almost glowing, the ridgeline sharp against a pale blue sky.
A few small marks on the upper dune face — footprints, perhaps, or wind scars — are the only evidence of scale. Without them, the dunes could be enormous or merely large. The ambiguity suits them.
That night we slept in a tent near the dunes, with local families as hosts. This image is from the hours just before.
This print suits contemporary interiors with natural materials — stone, wood, linen. Strong geometry, warm earth tones, and a sky that holds the whole thing together.
