This photograph was taken in the late afternoon at Iriqui National Park near Zagora, southern Morocco — reached by off-road vehicle with a local driver, after crossing flat stony desert, passing wild ostriches, and stopping at a small oasis. While other frames from this session zoom in on a single dune or a detail of texture, this one steps back and takes in the full landscape.
The foreground is dominated by a curved shadow sweeping across the lower half of the frame — a dark arc that anchors the composition and gives the eye a shape to follow. Beyond it, a band of sunlit sand, then another shadow, then more dunes receding into the distance in layers of orange and dark brown. At the back, the landscape opens further still: a chain of smaller dunes against a pale blue sky, the furthest ones barely more than silhouettes.
A few dry grass stems in the foreground are the only sign of life. Their scale tells you something about the size of what surrounds them.
