This photograph was taken in January 2026 in Nové Jirny, after one of the first heavy snowfalls the area had seen in years. While everyone else was sledging and skiing, I was out with a Nikon 200–500mm lens — the heaviest and most rarely used lens in my bag — looking for something worth the effort.
I almost came home empty-handed. On the way back, I found a small clearing where the snow had settled into gentle mounds. I pushed my tripod into the snow, spent about two hours working through compositions, and waited.
The result is a close-up photograph that doesn’t look like one. The snow mounds read as hills, the shallow depth of field softens everything into a quiet, almost monochrome landscape, and a single tiny branch — just barely above the surface — anchors the whole frame. The longer you look, the harder it is to tell whether you’re looking at a hillside from a distance or a handful of snow from very close.
