Once at the end of winter 2020, during a coronavirus pandemic, I wanted to take some outdoor photos. Also because it was a period of general quarantine I wanted to go somewhere where there will be no people. And exactly such a place is about 30 years old building of unfinished prison in Říčany near Prague.

It is a 4 story reinforced concrete building with nothing but floors, ceilings, and staircases. It is a beautiful and mysterious place with a post-apocalyptic atmosphere. But this photo was not taken directly in the building but in the overgrown and desolate large area around it.

In the meadow, dry grass and bushes without leaves waved in the wind. And in one place I discovered beautiful thistles whose leaves resembled lizards, chameleons, or old seashells.

But even more interesting were their dry flowers. There were thin thorns on the underneath of the flowers, with other smaller thorns. The thorns were curled into a kind of spiral, reminiscent of Fibonacci’s golden spiral – such an important pattern in art and, of course, in photography.

I photographed with a 90mm macro lens on an APS-C Nikon camera. But I could not take a tripod because the wind was too strong and the thistles were moving too much. Therefore, I had to take a handheld shot and take dozens of pictures. It took me a few days at home to pick the right, most beautiful photo. I transformed the photo into black and white so that the beautiful lines created by nature could be even more prominent. Now you can buy the photo as a wall art print. I hope you like it as much as I do.
