Botanical Gestures
A study of plants as lines, movement and quiet visual signs.
Botanical Gestures is a collection of photographs in which plants are not presented primarily as botanical subjects, but as visual gestures — lines, curves, rhythms, movements and signs. What matters to me is not the species of the plant, but its form, tension, inner movement and relationship to space.
Some photographs are made directly in nature, especially in winter, when snow becomes a natural white background. Others are created later in my home studio. During long walks in winter or early spring, I search for dry plants with unusual shapes. I am very selective and find a truly suitable plant only rarely. After bringing the plants home, I often keep them for several months, slowly returning to them and choosing only those that continue to reveal something visually strong.
The images move between botanical study, abstraction, drawing and quiet observation. Some are simple and minimalist; others use movement, multiple exposure or optical layering. A plant is often removed from its ordinary context so that it can appear as an independent form — like handwriting, dance, calligraphy or ink drawing.
Karl Blossfeldt’s work has strongly influenced the way I look at plants, especially his ability to reveal their sculptural and architectural qualities. Some works are also inspired by the quietness and reduction of Japanese Zen art. For me, this series is also a way of showing that nature itself is the greatest artist. Even a dry plant found by the side of a path, something most people would pass without noticing, can contain a quiet and unexpected beauty.
