Together with Margrose Olorunshogo, we have presented several articles on how to properly select suitable artworks (mostly printed art photographs) for different types of interiors. Each type of interior and even each individual room in a house or apartment requires a completely different approach, different use of print materials, different colors, or a different mood. That's why we have prepared one article for each type of interior: living room, bathroom, bedroom, office, and hotel.
While every interior has its own specifics, there are a few things to consider whenever you're buying a piece of art. And at this point, no matter what room it will be in. You should be drawn to the motif, style, colors, and artistry in the painting or photograph. Altogether, it should appeal to you.
You should always consider where to place the artwork you are so excited about. You may like large landscape photographs. But if you live in a small apartment where space is already tight, you'll have a hard time finding the right wall for it. In other words, the artwork should fit perfectly into your interior - both in motif and design and in size.
Tips on how to choose a piece of art
- Choose with your heart. The artwork should speak to you. You should be enthusiastic about it and "keep your eyes on it".
- The motif and design of the photograph or painting should be close to your heart.
- The colors of the artwork should match the interior. However, there is no harm in contrast.
- The artwork should definitely match the focus of the interior. An urban motif (e.g. a skyline with skyscrapers) will not be right for a country house.
- The artwork should not evoke negative feelings in you.
Living Room
The living room is where we spend most of our time. And not only alone or with family but also with friends and other visitors. So it also has a representative function. That's why we choose artworks that fit the interior, that we like and that say something about us.
Bathroom
Although it's not entirely common, even in the bathroom you can have works of art. The main condition, of course, is to have the photo printed on a material that will not be harmed by water and moisture. A paper poster or a painting on canvas probably wouldn't last long in the bathroom.
It is best to use a print on an acrylic plate, or you can also use an aluminum plate. As for the theme of the photo, it's up to you. Photographs of plants and other nature themes, abstract art, or nudity-themed art look best in the bathroom.
Bedroom
When you choose a piece of art to hang on your bedroom wall, it is very important what feelings it evokes in you. Most people will prefer soft tones, pleasing colors, or peaceful landscape photographs. But some people prefer wilder and more sensual art. But don't forget that you will see the artwork you put in your bedroom every night before you fall asleep and every morning when you wake up for many, many years.
Hotels
When choosing art photography for hotels, it is absolutely essential to choose the right style to match the interior. Different artworks are suitable for hotel common areas, reception, etc., and others for hotel rooms. Read more in the article.
Offices
And what art photos to choose for your office? Keep the following advice in mind and you won't make a mistake:
- It's all about presentable spaces that your clients will see.
- It's a place where your employees spend a lot of time. Therefore, the art should have a calming yet creative and playful feel.
- Corporate spaces shouldn't be cluttered with art, so carefully consider where and how much art you put in your offices.
- Always think about the harmony of the artwork with the interior.
